Jonatan Samuelsson, PhD
I am a historian of medicine, media and science at Umeå University in Sweden. In my thesis, which I
defended in march 2022, I studied the late 20th century debate about dental amalgams and mercury
poisoning in Sweden as mediated science controversy, contested diagnosis, and science-society
co-production.
Since then I have worked on early Swedish patient organisations together with Ylva Söderfeldt at
Uppsala University, and I am currently conducting a project on the history of medical journalism in
post-war Sweden, where I combine historical close-reading with large-scale digital research methods.
I teach and supervise students in History of Science and Ideas, History of Medicine, and Media and
Communication Studies.
In my spare time, you'll find me trying to learn programming, hanging out with my three children,
playing chess, or hammering at the piano.
I'd love to get in touch to discuss research, teaching, writing or other topics, so don't hesistate
to reach out.
